James Calloway spent five years as a barista and roaster in Portland before missing the mountains enough to move home. He brought back an obsession with extraction science, a reverence for farmers, and very strong opinions about water temperature.
He opened Ember & Grounds in 2020 in a 500-square-foot space with a two-group La Marzocca and a conviction that Durango deserved specialty coffee that took itself seriously without being pretentious.
