The Story of Petal & Thorn

Founder Mia Chen grew up in her grandmother's garden in rural Oregon, learning the names of flowers before she could read. After studying botanical illustration at RISD and apprenticing at two New York floral studios, she moved to Durango for the mountains and the light.

She opened Petal & Thorn in 2017 with a cooler, a workbench, and a belief that flowers should be designed, not just arranged. Seven years later, she leads a team of three designers and sources from 12 farms across the West.

Lead Designer & Founder

Mia holds a BFA in Botanical Illustration from RISD and is a certified member of the American Institute of Floral Designers. She has designed florals for 200+ weddings and specializes in garden-style, organic arrangements that look like they were just gathered from a meadow.
