Our Story

Three generations of recipes. One Durango kitchen. A lifetime of flavor.

From Oaxaca to Durango

La Casa del Sol started in 2018 when Chef Sofia Reyes decided to honor her grandmother's legacy the only way she knew how — by cooking. Sofia grew up in Oaxaca watching her abuela prepare mole for village celebrations, her mother roll tamales for Christmas, and her tías debate the perfect salsa verde at every family gathering.

After culinary training in Mexico City and five years working in restaurants across Denver, Sofia settled in Durango and opened La Casa del Sol with a single mission: serve food that tastes like it was made by someone who loves you.

Today, the restaurant seats 80 guests, employs 22 team members, and serves over 500 meals on a busy Saturday night — but the recipes haven't changed. Every mole still takes two days. Every tortilla is still pressed by hand. And every guest still gets the same warmth Sofia's grandmother showed everyone who walked through her door.

What We Stand For

The principles behind every plate we serve.

Authenticity First

We don't Americanize our recipes. If it takes 28 ingredients and two days to make proper mole, that's what we do.

Community Roots

We sponsor local youth soccer, donate meals to Durango Food Bank, and host free cooking classes every quarter.

Sustainability

Compostable takeout containers, local sourcing, and a food waste program that diverts 90% of kitchen scraps from the landfill.
